Bank Negara opens office in Beijing

Bank Negara Malaysia has opened a representative office at Beijing to promote bilateral trade and investment between Malaysia and China. The Beijing office is the third overseas representative office established by Bank Negara Malaysia in addition to its offices in London and New York. 

The office will serve as an important liaison point with China's regulators and financial market participants to support a deeper understanding of both countries' economic and financial developments.

The establishment of the office here marked another milestone in bilateral ties between Malaysia and China, said Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz. Furthermore, she also said that "This also reflected the deepening financial and economic linkages between the two countries".

Perodua unveils Sedan concept

KUALA LUMPUR: Perodua unveiled its concept car model, called Buddyz, which could be the company's first sedan car, at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2013.

President and chief executive officer Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said the concept model was drawn from the company's inspiration and insight of the automotive industry and guided by its technical and technology partner, Daihatsu.

"As we are now entering the stage where we can produce our own world-class upper body design, this model is the next evolutionary step in Perodua's history," he said at the unveiling of the concept model here on Thursday.

Asia going for GOLD

Falling gold price reignites demand as the bullion loses its appeal in the West.

GOLD, as an investment had a horrid year and will probably continue to disappoint investors next year. But Asian consumers are unperturbed, as they see the sharp decline in bullion prices as a golden opportunity to stock up their hoard of the precious metal.

The benchmark spot gold price in New York had dropped 22% year-to-date at US$1,287 an ounce yesterday and was heading into its first annual loss in more than a decade.

Some analysts predict prices will fall even lower in 2014, with Goldman Sachs’ commodity research head Jeffery Currie declaring gold a “slam dunk” sell for next year.

Currie also says that gold may “overshoot” below the US$1,000 mark in the near term as fund managers and savers in the West continue to unwind their positions in gold investment products ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s plan to taper down its monthly bond-buying programme.

HSBC chief metal analyst James Steel announced that “gold’s more-than-decade-long bull market ended this year.”

The price of gold has had a spectacular run up since the start of the new millennium, but gold’s shiny investment status as the safest bet at times of crisis may have run its course, at least in the West, as risk appetite return for fast-money fund managers.

Since the burst of the US dotcom IT bubble in 2000, the price of gold has soared from US$300 an ounce to a dizzying height of US$1,920 on Sept 6, 2011. The bullion more than doubled its value from early 2007 to mid-2011 after the Lehman Brotherscollapse and the start of Greek crisis in the eurozone.

Gold supporters in past years argued that loose money-printing programme by central banks in developed economies to jumpstart growth will fuel inflation on a global scale that will render paper currency useless everywhere.

It was the fear of an imminent economic collapse in 2009 that drove investors into gold as they sought to protect their capital and ride out the unfolding turmoil in the West. But as the worst of the recession passes, gold increasingly loses its shine.

Analysts say as the outlook for the global economies brightens in recent months, billions of dollars that were poured into various sophisticated gold investment products have been pulled out and shifted into equities and other riskier investment classes. The demand for gold, which pays no dividends and is just a store of value, suddenly vanished.

The steep fall in April this year plunged gold into bear market territory and marked a remarkable turnabout for the precious metal. Even some of its strongest supporters, including billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Johnson, halved his stake during the second quarter of this year in SPDR Gold Trust, the biggest gold exchange-traded fund (ETF) following the rout.

The gold market has had its share of spectacular booms and busts before.

Nobel prize winner for economics Paul Krugman wrote that gold historically has been anything but a safe investment, and can sometimes yield big gains as in the 1970s and the period between 2001 and 2011. But he noted that the 1970s run up was followed by “an epic plunge” with the real value of gold falling by two-thirds.

Stock investment guru Warren Buffet too had said that he was never a fan of gold as an investment. He argued that gold doesn’t do anything and he would rather put his money in more productive ventures such as a farm or a company.

Strong demand

While falling gold prices may whet the appetite of legendary investors like Buffet, a rising number of households in fast-growing developing Asian economies are stepping up their purchases of the metal as ornaments and investment, according to the World Gold Council (WGC) on Thursday.

“The growth we are seeing in jewellery, bars and coins, in particular, demonstrates once again the unique diversity of gold demand, as different sectors increase in prominence at different points in the global economic cycle, clear evidence of ebbs and flow of what is an extremely liquid market,’’ WGC’s managing director for investment Marcus Grubb says.

He says two key themes have emerged during 2013. The increasing level of consumer demand off-setting outflows from ETFs and the geographical flow of gold from western to eastern markets.

In Europe, gold is being refined from larger bars suitable into smaller sizes preferred in Asia, WGC says. Exports of bullion from the United Kingdom to refineries in Switzerland rose more than 10-fold to 1,016.3 tonnes in the first eight months this year.

China is poised to overtake India as the world’s largest consumer of gold as consumption is expected to reach 1,000 tonnes this year. Since 2008, demand for gold in India more than doubled, while consumption in China rose almost 350%.

The two big countries, combined with fast-growing markets in Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, will account for 60% of global gold consumption this year.

“Projected income gains by the World Bank and HSBC growth forecast imply that China will remain a strong buyer of bullion,” commodity analysts at HSBC wrote last week.

They argue that China is “the single most bullish factor” in the gold market right now, and if China’s demand for gold cools in 2014, without a pick up in physical demand from India or a revival in Western investment in ETFs, then the outlook for gold price in 2014 will probably will be subdued.

WGC says on Thursday that demand for gold in the third quarter of 2013 fell 21% year-on-year to 868.5 tonnes, while supply of gold declined 3% to 1,145.5 tonnes during the same period despite modest increase in mines production.

The high gold price in recent years has spurred mining companies and adventurous entrepreneurs to open new mines and increase production. But the slump this year has forced a growing number of smaller and unprofitable operators to cease business.

Earlier this week, Malaysia Smelting Corp Bhd said it had set aside RM34.5mil for impairment charges and other provisions after the company and its South Korean partners took the painful decision to close their gold and base metals mining operations in the Philippines.

Analysts at RHB Research Institute think that bill will probably be higher, assuming the group was unable to get a decent price for its processing plant there. Given the current bearish mood in the metal complex, it is a buyer’s market out there.

But like many other things, the price of gold is determined by demand and supply. Demand for gold in Asia, which is already at a record, are poised to increase even further amid rising affluence in the region.

Samsung Galaxy S5 release date in 2014

For those eagerly waiting for the Galaxy S5, it isn't coming at the end of 2013 like many hoped it would. Instead, it will most likely arrive in early 2014 to line up with its one-year release of the Galaxy S4. In light of this all, there are several interesting developments Samsung has in-explicitly revealed that we will likely see in the Galaxy S5. Samsung confirmed the development of a 16MP camera featuring a rumored ISOCELL sensor when it presented this technology to over 350 analysts in a Seoul conference on Nov. 6. The ISOCELL sensor is supposed to improve picture quality especially under low-lighting. This is done by physically isolating each individual pixel by mounting a physical barrier around each pixel. The ISOCELL quality comparison was displayed in their press-conference release slide.

After Apple equipped their new iPhones with a 64-bit processor, Samsung is looking to do the same thing. Stephen Woo, System LSI president, stated that Samsung will first offer a 64-bit processor based on ARM's core before releasing an optimized IP-cores. However, unlike Apple, Samsung did not code Android and so they will need Google to write the 64-bit version for it. Nevertheless, Samsung will definitely try to come out first with 3GB of RAM for improved performance. 

Speaking of Android, the Galaxy S5 is expected to come with Android 4.4 KitKat which offers several improvements including a revamped NFC payment gateway, platform stability, immersive mode, "OK Google" voice navigation commands. More information can be found over at PC Advisor UK.

There will also be a change in the screen display as well as resolution. Samsung is likely to implement a WQHD 2,560 x 1,440 resolution and 560 ppi pixel density display on the Galaxy s5. As for the actual screen size, Samsung will most likely keep this at around 5 inches. Suggested release date is March 2014 to coincide with the one year release date of the Galaxy S4 in March 2013.

More than 50 arrested at Los Angeles protest over Wal-Mart wages

Los Angeles - More than 50 people were arrested in a protest demanding better wages for Wal-Mart employees outside a local store in the Chinatown section of Los Angeles Thursday night. The protest was organized by union activists. It also referred to the protests as the "largest civil disobedience in Wal-Mart history." There were more than 100 police in riot gear involved in the incident. A helicopter circled above. According to a local NBC television station, the protest was scheduled to be between 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Reuters reported the protesters did not resist when they were arrested for refusing an order by police. They were told they would be detained overnight unless $500 bail was posted, according to Detective Gus Villanueva, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department. Glen Arnodo, the staff director for the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor said his group organized the protest to draw attention to what he called Wal-Mart's role in income inequality.

"Wal-Mart really perpetuates and epitomizes the unequal distribution of wealth that we have in this country right now," Arnodo commented. Arnodo said the majority of the demonstrators were union members. He stressed the protest, which included nurses and teachers, community activists and others participating, was peaceful. Wal-Mart spokesman Kory Lundber said there were "virtually no (Wal-Mart) associates" involved in the protest. He added Wal-Mart employees "know the truth" about working for the company. He added employees of his company have "more opportunities for career growth and greater economic security for their family than many other companies in America." 

Moreover, Wal-Mart worker Anthony Goytia, a 31-year-old father of two, said he struggles daily "to make sure my family doesn't go hungry" on his $12,000 annual salary at Wal-Mart. He added that the power went out at his house the day before because he couldn't pay the bill. Goytia said to survive he often sells plasma and participates in clinical trials.

YouTube co-founder not happy with site's new commenting system

Jawed Karim, the co-founder of YouTube, joined the scores of people slamming Google's changes to the site, which now enforces the use of the Google+ social networking site. Karim has not posted anything to his YouTube page in eight years, but last week he decided to update it. The second post he has ever made was directed at Google's changes to YouTube's commenting system.

Karim's post said "why the f**k do I need a Google+ account to comment on a video?" Google announced back in September that users would need a Google+ account in order to comment on videos. Moreover, any YouTube users are not pleased with the changes, and many videos have been bombarded by people criticizing the new style of commenting. There is also a petition asking Google to reverse the changes, and in one single day it has garnered more than 40,000 signatures.

Apple tries to trademark the word “startup” in Malaysia

Apple is attempting to trademark one of the most common business terms out there. The application was made on 23rd July to the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO). According to the news, Apple is applying to hold the trademark of the word under various computing, mobile and educational classes.

Malaysia isn’t the only country Apple has attempted this sort of shenanigan. They’ve also been trying to do the same thing in Singapore since 2011. It's by no means the first time a company has attempted to trademark a common term and we doubt it’ll be the last.

'Bomoh' fined RM2,000 for cheating client of RM25,500

PETALING JAYA: A "bomoh" on the run for seven years after defrauding his client of RM25,500, was fined RM2,000 by the magistrate's court yesterday. Raja Mohd Suhaimi Raja Abu Bakar, 50, pleaded guilty to cheating customer service officer Habibah Mat Yit, 56, by showing her grant of land supposedly for sale. On May 2005, the complainant sought treatment from Suhaimi due to disturbance by spirits. Grateful for his service, she helped him settle his debts by giving him a loan. She had withdrawn money from her Tabung Haji account, borrowed from her sister and Bank Rakyat for that purpose. The accused had promised to repay her through proceeds from a land sale and had shown her the land grant. When he could not be traced on Aug 2005, she realized she had been duped and lodged a police report.

The iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on November

U.S. Cellular, the 5th largest wireless network in the US, has announced today that it will get the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on November 8th. Subscribers on the network have been champing at the bit for the announcement and Twitter is full of folks complaining that they still hadn't announced a date that the device would come to the carrier for the first time ever.

The iPhone 5s and 5c launched essentially simultaneously on Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile, and has been rolling out to smaller carriers ever since. November 8th marks a delay of over a month from the initial release, though Virgin Mobile and other regional carriers have had it since early October.

Twitter overtakes Facebook among US teens

NEW YORK , United States: Twitter has overtaken Facebook as the most popular social network among US teens, according to a new survey.

The study by the financial firm Piper Jaffray found Twitter was preferred by 26 percent of adolescents while Facebook and its recently acquired unit Instagram were each chosen by 23 percent. 

It found that Twitter, Facebook and Instagram remained well ahead of other social networks used by teens. Just 4 percent of teens preferred Tumblr, unchanged from earlier this year, and three percent named Google+, down from five percent. 

The news comes as Twitter is readying a 1 billion initial public offering, which will be significantly smaller than Facebook’s last year but still among the most coveted in the sector.    

Twitter reports having 218 million active users worldwide. “The data point is likely unsurprising as the trend in our survey has been moving toward Twitter over the past couple of years,” said analysts Gene Munster and Douglas Clinton in a note to clients. 

“Overall, regardless of the trend in teen preference toward other networks, we continue to believe that Facebook has additional avenues for monetization in Instagram and video in the coming months.” 

The survey of some 8,600 teens showed a shift from a survey earlier this year in which Facebook was preferred over Twitter by 33 to 30 percents. 

The note that Instagram “continues to look like a smart acquisition for Facebook as it is now tied with Facebook as the second most important social network according to our teen survey.” 

It noted that a plan to include advertising on the Instagram platform would be “a catalyst” for Facebook, for which Piper Jaffray set a target price of 57 a share. Facebook shares were down 2.6% in morning trade at 45.91.

I'm very sure that everyone recognize this popular game. Sometimes, I also playing this game when I feels bored. Do you know that almost 100 million people logging on every day for a fix of "Candy Crush Saga" game? Global game-maker King is showing rivals not just how to hook players, but how to get them to pay.

I just read one article about this game, so let's me share with all of you... 

King is the latest among European tech firms like Rovio, creator of mega-hit Angry Birds, and Mojang, behind Minecraft, to make it big on the global gaming scene. King's focus on the multi-billion dollar mobile games market by creating short, addictive puzzles for the fastest-growing part of the gaming industry which has helped it reap profits rare in its field.

King was set up in Sweden a decade ago by friends working at the same tech startup and got 34 million euros funding from Apax Partners and Index Ventures in 2005. It has been profitable since, a fact that analysts put down to its ability to persuade players to pay several times over to continue the same game. Its "freemium model", in which games are free but players can pay for add-ons or extra lives, has been particularly effective because of the success of Candy Crush, described by some analysts as a global phenomenon.

"Candy Crush" is one of the biggest mass market consumer games in years," said Adam Krejcik at Eilers Research in California. "They have been profitable for a while. This game has certainly brought them into a new category."

The puzzle game, in which players line up gleaming 3-D sweets to knock out jelly, chocolate and liquorice, is available online, on smartphone and Facebook. It has held the No. 1 spot for apps on Facebook for nine months and is Apple's top-grossing U.S. app, more popular than Spotify and TripAdvisor. King also says it is considering new platforms for the game such as smart TV.

Globally, mobile game revenues generated through Apple iOS & Google Playstore are expected to exceed $10 billion this year, according to Krejcik. Roughly half of those are revenues generated by seven publishers including King, DeNa, GungHo Online and Electronic Arts.

According to King's Chief Creative Officer Sebastian Knutsson, "Candy Crush" is addictive because it's equal parts pain, fun and fits consumers' short attention span. Knutsson is a one of the five founders of King who between them hold 25% is also part of the 10-strong Swedish team that came up with "Candy Crush." 

"Candies felt like something that everybody would have a positive feeling about.. And I wanted something that could have shine and glossiness without being something unattainable," said Knutsson.

Players lured by the appealing graphics of "Candy Crush" can pay for more lives or must wait for 30 minutes before they may start again - though some cheat and move the clocks on their smartphones ahead so they can continue. The game's appeal was broadened by its social aspect: Players can share their progress on Facebook, swapping lives as well as tips on how to crack the various levels. 

King says its decision last year to shift its focus to its mobile platform was pivotal because that market was booming and the game suited it well. The candies worked well on mobile screens, Knutsson said. Analysts note the game is easy to hop in and out of, making it a good time killer for mobile players, yet offers new challenges to give players a new twist when they play again. The game's success led CEO of arch-rival Zynga, former Microsoft Corp Xbox boss Don Mattrick to admit: "I'll fess up, I'm a candy crush player and I've enjoyed it."

Deputy chairman Datuk Takashi Hibi said the company planned to introduce the Toyota Camry Hybrid as the new completely knocked down (CKD) model to be assembled locally. However, whether the company will introduce it or not will depend on the incentives in the revised National Automotive Policy, expected to be announced soon.

“The Camry Hybrid could be priced higher than the conventional Camry with the 2.5 litre petrol engine, but we recognise the needs of our customers who are more environmentally concerned, that is why we are planning to introduce the hybrid variant,” he said at the launch of the Lexus ES yesterday.

This is the first time UMW Toyota Motor has expressed its intention to assemble hybrid vehicles locally after its competitor, Honda Malaysia, started assembling the Honda Jazz hybrid.

Hibi said the Camry was a feasible model due to its high localisation rate, compared with the Prius, a standalone model with limited production and sales volume.

The company expects the Camry Hybrid CKD assembly line to be ready by the middle or third quarter of next year. Currently, UMW Toyota assembles the Avanza, Vios and the Camry at its plant in Shah Alam.

It is usually only economical for car manufacturers to embark on CKD assembly when annual demand exceeds 10,000 units for each model. Meanwhile, president Datuk Ismet Suki said the company expected the newly-launched Lexus ES model to command 40% of its overall Lexus sales in Malaysia next year.

“The new ES bridges the gap between the sporty Lexus IS and the Lexus GS executive sedan by offering an immaculately-crafted interior, spaciousness and comfort,” he said. “We have sold about 800 units of Lexus year-to-date, and are on track to hit our sales target of 1,300 units this year. Next year we are targeting to sell 1,600 units of Lexus.”

He said sales this year had been affected as buyers took a wait-and-see approach during the general election period. In 2012, the company sold 1,471 Lexus vehicles.

The new Lexus ES is available in two petrol variants and one hybrid version and is priced from RM259,800 onwards.

One popular way for hackers to steal your money or your identity is to send an email stating that you won a contest or received a job offer. Or maybe someone wants to meet you, or claims that you can make money for shipping goods for them. The catch is that you have to send in personal or banking information, or pay a fee. Of course, your information and money is going straight to hackers.

You might think that you would never fall for one of these schemes, but millions of people do every day. Remember to use common sense before reacting to any email. Scams rely a quick response. If you take your time and really think about what the email says, you will typically see through the manipulative scam. Never forget the old adage, “If it sounds too good to be true…”

Moreover, if you receive an email from your bank, credit card company or another type of financial institution, and it seems “phishy,” it probably is. If you are unsure, always call the institution to find out whether the email is legitimate. Remember that a legitimate email from your bank will never ask you to provide any sensitive information via email.

Tricky Trojan

Hackers also may want to install a virus on your computer in order to record everything you type. This enables hackers to have your personal info and also send out spam email or attack other computers. In order to do this, the hackers disguise the virus as something harmless. This is called a Trojan horse, or Trojan.

One of the most popular ways to deliver a Trojan is a variation of the phishing e-mail scams. For example, the -mail might say it’s from a shipping service, bank or other reputable company and that there’s been a problem with a transaction. To learn more, you have to open an email attachment. The attachment might look like a normal file, but it really contains a Trojan. Clicking on the file installs it before you can do anything.

Similar scams also appear on Facebook and Twitter. You think you’re going to watch a funny video your friend posted. Instead, a popup tells you to update your video player. The “update” file it provides is really a Trojan.

Using common sense and keeping your security software up-to-date should protect you from most Trojans. However, if you accidentally open a malicious attachment and are not sure what to do, call an IT expert. They can walk you through removing the Trojan and getting you up-and-running safely.

Dubious Downloads

Security software is not always enough. Programs on your computer might have weaknesses that hackers can use to bypass security software. Hackers can set up websites embedded with viruses. You might get there by clicking a malicious link in a phishing e-mail or on social media. You can even find these sites in a search for popular programs or topics.

Hackers can also sneak malicious code on to legitimate websites. The code scans your computers for security holes. If it finds one, a virus can download and install without you doing anything.

To stay safe, you have to keep your programs up-to-date. Every month, Microsoft releases updates for Windows and Internet Explorer. These updates close critical security holes that hackers exploit.

Other critical programs to patch are Adobe’s Flash and Reader and Oracle’s Java. Using older versions of these programs makes it easier for hackers to take advantage of security holes. You should also be using the latest version of your programs. If you’re using Internet Explorer 6, 7 or 8, upgrade right away!

What’s The Password? 

While you might think that hackers spend hours guessing passwords, using sophisticated programs to figure them out. In reality, most hackers go around passwords. They might get your password from a data breach at a company or website you use.

It’s important that you use a different password for every account. That way, if a hacker discovers one, they can’t get in to every account. And of course, keep all your security programs updated.

Encrypted is Essential

Is your Wi-Fi network at home encrypted? If not, then it absolutely should be immediately!

A non-encrypted Wi-Fi network means hackers, and neighbors, can connect to your network from outside. They can see and record everything you do. They can surf to bad websites and download illegal files on your connection. You need to take a few minutes and secure your network.
